Diethylstilbestrol (DES), together with dienestrol and hexestrol belong to the group of stilbenes. The stilbenes are used to increase weight gain by improving feed conversion in cattle, chicken and lambs. The use of anabolics, however, was banned in the EU (Council Directive 96/22/EC), especially DES which has carcinogenic properties.
The DES ELISA is used for the quantitative analysis of DES in cattle urine or tissue samples (muscle). The calibration curve is virtually linear in the range of 0.1 to 5 ng/ml. The kit uses a polyclonal rabbit antibody which shows the following cross-reactivities: DES (100%), dienestrol (10%) and hexestrol (10%).
