Chloramphenicol is a broad-spectrum bacteriostatic antibiotic which is effective against a wide variety of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, including most anaerobic organisms. It was widely used in veterinary medicine. Due to its toxicity, however, the use of chloramphenicol is banned in the EU since 1994. In 2003 an MRPL (Minimum Required Performance Limit) was set at 0.3 ng/g in the EU for chloramphenicol in meat, eggs, milk, honey, urine and aquaculture products (Commission Decision 2003/181/EC).
EuroProxima has two CAP kits in its program. Kit 5091CAP is available since 1992 and is well documented in literature. The fast CAP kit (5091CAPF) was introduced in 2010. The antibody in this kit shows a 100% cross-reactivity with CAP-glucuronide compared with 65% of the CAP kit. In addition, the total incubation time of the fast CAP kit is only 45 minutes, whereas all other features of the successful CAP kit are maintained. Despite a slightly lower sensitivity, the fast CAP kit complies with all regulatory demands.
