Nicarbazin has been used in starter rations for several decades as an aid in the prevention of faecal and intestinal coccidiosis in broiler chickens. It may be used in combination with ionophore coccidiostatics. Chemically, it is an equimolar complex of 1,3- N,N’-bis(4-nitrophenyl)urea and 4,6-dimethyl-2(1 H)-pyrimidone. These compounds are also known as 4,4‘-dinitrocarbanilide and 2-hydroxy-4,6-dimethylpyrimidine, respectively.
